Challenges and Management Practices of the Solid Waste in Ghana. The Case of Kumasi Metropolitan

Waste issues seem to be boring subject that does not excite many people, however, its consequences if underestimated can wreck the health and existence of society. The study focuses on investigating the challenges and management practices of solid waste in Kumasi metropolitan whiles suggesting policy recommendation. The study adopted a qualitative approach through the use of interviews to acquire in-depth knowledge from top officials in this sector of analysis whiles making use of information from households. Findings from the study show that the haphazardly disposal of waste by most of the communities were as a results of inadequate skip containers in their vicinity. Also, there is low level of education of solid waste management. It is imperative that recommended measures are taken into actions such as using various schools, print and electronic media to sensitize the communities on health implication of filthy surroundings. Also, the introduction of polluter pay principle, bring system, kerbside system in various communities could be of great help to the metropolitan.
