This research is devoted to the analysis of the geographical space of the novel, namely — the spatial opposition expressed by the opposition of urban and provincial space. The antithesis of urban and provincial space has always been emphasised as a separate type of a semantic opposition, that is used as the basis for a number of plot twists. The main field of this work is the analysis of the special trends of the embodiment of this semantic opposition in the work of O. de Balzac on the example of his two novels: Lost illusions and Splendors and Misery of courtesans, which tells the story of the conquest of the capital by a provincial. In this research, we will try to apply the modern geocritical approach that emerged in the early XXI century to the analysis of texts of the XIX century and on the basis of this study to demonstrate the possibility of applying modern literary approaches to texts of another era, that indicates the inextricable link between the literature of previous generations and modern literary study.
