Attitude to Language as a Sociolinguistic Problem: A Case of Catalan Bilinguals
This study aims to identify attitudes towards language and identity in Catalonia. The study analyzes this phenomenon based on the model of Spanish-Catalan bilingualism. The study is based on 13 semi-structured interviews. We examined informants who live throughout the life in Catalonia in one of three cities: Barcelona, Girona, Taragona. We assume that linguistic behavior will mainly depend on national identity due to the long-standing Spanish-Catalan conflict, the topic of dialogue and political ideology. This study includes a review of the literature on the history of the conflict, a review of linguistic and sociolinguistic literature about identity and code-switching, research methodology and analysis of the obtained empirical data.
