This study investigates the mechanisms that facilitate women’s advancement in politics in Russia and Georgia. The study focuses in particular on the liberal parties in these two countries. Empirically, the study compare six interviews with Russian women-party members and the findings in the work of the Georgian author Giorgi Urchukhishvili “Women in the Parties: Deconstructing Myths”. The results of our study demonstrate that the mechanisms for the advancement of women in politics in Russia and Georgia differ. They differ in the selection process of women in the party and in the issues that women face as they seek to build their political career. We find that the selection of women takes place on the basis of social ties in Georgia, while in Russia, a woman’s level of competence becomes in the selection process. Women in Georgia are more susceptible to gender-based obstacles than Russian women, while? – the major issue Russia woman face stem primarily from their an opposition party, rather than their gender. Despite methodological and empirical limitations we believe that our research will be of benefit to subsequent studies on this topic.
