The relationship between household over-indebtedness and individual self-control is under primary attention. The empirical analysis of the representative sample of Russian households suggests highly significant dependence of financial distress on non-cognitive aspects. Positive effect of self-control on household finance is thus the major finding of the research. Apart from self-control and the formerly defined factors, over-indebtedness is determined by the degree of risk aversion of the person responsible for financial decisions of the household. The conclusions drawn from the analysis also reject the importance of some of the conventional determinants of household over-indebtedness.
