This paper evaluated life satisfaction of terminally ill ALS patients. It was shown that their current life quality passes through several stages, in which different aspects of patients’ life receive different weights. The study contributes to the existing literature in that it constructs an empirical measure of life satisfaction based on long-lasting feelings and attitudes reported by the patient, such as general breathing difficulties, swallowing difficulties or pain experience. The concept of experienced utility was used, which is a conditional mean of remembered utility, but does not directly predetermine it. Overall, it was shown that terminally ill patients with relatively high ALSFRS-R index have decreased experienced utility index, which means that their reference points have shifted.
