International legal standards of the protection of geographical indications

The purpose of this work is to identify international legal principles and standards of geographical indications protection, as well as their implementation within the Russian legal system. The main objectives are: consideration of general issues of the formation and development of the GI protection system at the international level; general assessment of the WTO’s role in the GI international legal regulation; identification of the existing systems of GI protection; analysis of the TRIPS Agreement provisions on the GI regulation; consideration of the Member States’ practice of the application of the TRIPS provisions on GI; consideration of general issues of formation and development of the GI protection system within the EU; analysis of the current legislation of the Russian Federation in this field. Based on the results of the work, it has been concluded that there is no uniform standard in the world on the approach to the legal regulation of the protection of geographical indications. At the same time, the most advanced system is the system implemented within the EU. In the course of the analysis of the legal regulation of the mentioned area within the framework of the Russian legal system it has been concluded that the use of EU’s positive experience in the process of the Russian geographical indications system’s improvement process is necessary
