In the context of internationalization and globalization, English plays the role of a lingua franca in academic and professional communication. Consequently, English for multiple purposes comes to the fore in curricula of Russian universities. This study aims at investigating the integration of English General Academic Purposes (EGAP) and English for Specific Academic Purposes (ESAP) in the course “Academic Writing in English” taught to students majoring in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). To achieve the goal, the author takes the case of academic writing for students at HSE University who major in applied mathematics. Employed are such methods as surveying and fragments of experimental teaching. Based on the students’needs analysis obtained via the survey and the data collected through teaching two classes to 2 groups of students, recommendations are formulated as to how the existing course can be improved. Overall, the study might offer further suggestions linked to teaching EGAP and ESAP at HSE University to students of other majors.
