Human capital of the company is becoming an increasing concern in modern business cycle. Of particular interest are Chief Executive Officers, who usually determine development strategies and, thus, have a direct impact on operational and financial efficiency of the company. This paper investigates the relationship between personal characteristics of the CEO and growth sustainability of a company. The practical aim of the study is to offer the most optimal strategy in making management decisions that affect the development of the company.

Analytical methods are applied to build a model of sustainable growth rate and to determine a proper proxy-variable. Empirical research has shown that sustainable companies are managed by more educated and experienced CEOs on the sample of 60 Russian companies. Moreover, statistical significance of MBA and Ph.D. degrees as well as work experience of the General Director was revealed. On the basis of regression analysis, the significance of human capital as a determinant of sustainable growth rate was proved.
