Determinants of Youth Unemployment in the Russian Labour Market

Year of Graduation: 2019

The Youth unemployment rate (YUR) is one of the core indicators of a socio-economic activity depicting the position of young people in the labour market, their adaptation to a particular period of the business cycle and institutional changes. The relevance of this topic can be confirmed by the fact that the YUR in Russia is higher than the national average one, even among young people aged 25-29 years (5,9% vs 5.2% in 2017). In this research the personal and social characteristics of youth are considered as the main determinants of unemployment from the point of labour supply. The analysis is based on micro-level data from RLMS-HSE for the 2016 and adopts the multinomial logit model. As a result, gender and psychological characteristics, work experience, educational level, type of settlement and other social variables are expected to have a significant influence on a probability of young people being unemployed.
