The Evolution of the Representation of Monkey King in the Film History

The aim of my study is to learn, how the depiction of the Monkey King has changed in the film history. According to this aim, I’ve set the following goals: - To find out the distinctive features of the Monkey King in the classical Chinese literature. - To find out if the Monkey King belongs to the “trixter’s” archetype. - To compare the depiction of the Monkey King in the literature and cinematography, to find both differences and similarities in its depiction. - To learn how the personage representation has changed from film to film. - To find out if the personages belongs to the “trixter’s” archetype. The research is based on the empirical methods: studying the literature, comparing the personage from literature with ones from films. The analogy method was also used. It has helped to match the depiction of Sun Wukong with the similar personages from literature and traditions of different cultures. To conclude, in the first part the main characteristics of Sun Wukong in the traditional literature were lighted out, the definition of the “trixter’s” archetype was given. In the second and third parts the main characteristics of the Monkey King, as cinematographic personage, were studied. The personage belonging to the “trixter’s” archetype was stated. It is point out how the Monkey King personage’s characteristics had been changed from film to film.
