Building Competencies of Project Managers in New Areas of Scientific and Technological Development (the Case of Biotechnologies)

The topic of building competencies of the project managers in the biotechnology industry is actual due to the high complexity of the projects, large investments in the R&D and significant influence of the project managers on the success. The problem is that international standards of competence do not take into account the core competencies of project managers in the particular industries. The aim of this work is to identify the most popular competencies of project managers in biotechnology industry. The objectives are to create a database of project managers' vacancies and make its frequency analysis, then to compare the identified requirements with the ICB IPMA standard and develop the recommendations. The first chapter contains the review of the theoretical basis of the competencies including approaches to study competencies, frameworks of competencies, competencies of project managers. In the second chapter, there is the identification of the limitations of the study concerning biotechnology industry area. Also, there is a review of the career path of the project managers, their responsibilities and leadership in the project team. The third chapter is about analysis of the obtained data and comparison the requirements of companies with the ICB IPMA standard. There are the recommendations to include a number of competencies in the educational programs and also there are the recommendations for the future researches.
