The aim of the paper is to discuss the impact of the effects the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011 has on Japanese business. The study covers the works of several Western European, American and Japanese authors. All of them are aimed to define various aspects of the cataclysm’s impact on business, legislation and the nation. There is energy crisis, supply chain’s disruption, destruction of facilities and infrastructure, which were caused by the earthquake and tsunami among them. However, there is no comprehensive study to examine the impact of the events in terms of Japanese business. Therefore, this work is aimed at clarifying the situation in which various business structures found themselves because of the cataclysm occurred, as well as determining the nature of the damage that was suffered by various industries and businesses and identifying the most affected organizational structures. For these purposes, this research is mostly based on primary data, among which there are reports and statistical materials collected and published by Japanese government organizations. The results of the current research will help to identify the industries and types of business that turned out to be the most vulnerable in this situation, to determine the causes of differences in the scale and nature of the damage suffered. Since there is a likelihood of such events recurring, a retrospective analysis of the consequences of this large-scale disaster could contribute in identifying potential ways in order to prevent a number of negative scenarios from recurring in the future, reducing their negative impact, and developing measures to most effectively and quickly overcome crises caused by natural disasters. Thus, this work can be the basis for subsequent theoretical studies and analytical works.
