Self-identifications of Protopop Avvakum and Symeon Polotsky in Their Writings: Common and Different

“Rebel” XVII century raised a lot of problems in society, in particular, in the religious and church sphere. The professional writers, being invited to the court, began to resist the Old Believers, who defiantly opposed “foreign forms” and defended the originality of Russian culture. So, the confrontation was took place in the literary-polemical controversy of two literary schools: the court (Symeon Polotsky), and the democratic-popular one, led by the “divisive” writers (including Avvakum). The purpose of the study is to determine the self-identifications and identities of Avvakum Petrov and Symeon Polotsky, which were formed throughout their lives and were reflected in their writings.
