The purpose of this study is to study local fashion in Russia in the post-Soviet period, in particular, “provincial chic” - a style based on the perception of global trends at the local level, their interpretation in an effort to look fashionable in conditions of limited resources. His goal is to find out what was fashionable in the post-Soviet province, to identify the prevailing trends, to trace how these trends were interpreted and mixed with everyday style, to find out whether the “provincial chic” has survived today and, finally, to create a new fashion collection based on this research. Methods include historical research, experimental field research and content analysis. The main source for the first were photographs from various family archives of the 1980s-2000s, as well as artistic photo projects and films depicting "provincial chic." Field studies were conducted to find out what changes the “provincial chic” has undergone. The stages of the work included: a search for visual materials illustrating the topic: trips in search of evidence of the existence of “provincial chic” in 2019; analysis and comparison of materials; compiling a visual study book; creating the concept and sketches of the fashion collection; implementation of the collection. The results show that, on the one hand, there is a persistence of global trends in the post-Soviet period, but, on the other hand, there are changes in materials, colors and cut. They also show that the combination of the incompatible, on which the local fashion is built, is in fact a combination of the new and the old. “Provincial chic” is becoming less and less popular, because information about what is fashionable is now publicly available. At the same time, “provincial chic” obviously cannot disappear completely in the near future, because not everyone has enough money to update their wardrobe every season; old clothes will remain and mix with new clothes, generating new stylistic decisions.
