Modern Russian society offers a huge number of opportunities for young people to accumulate and realize their labor potential, including the freedom to choose a professional field of development.

That is why more and more graduates work not in their specialty nowadays. The reasons for this may be different, from the conscious choice of the graduate himself to the conditions dictated by the modern labor market.

We consider the work in the specialty as a qualitative characteristic of the transition “study-work”. Because of the study, we get an answer to the question: does a non-specialty job really cause a decline in the quality of employment. As a transition indictor we use such index as: salary level, satisfaction with the current place of work, the intention to change jobs and vertical compliance.

The study was based on a sample observation of the employment of graduates at the periods from 2010 to 2015, who received professional and higher education based on the Federal State Statistics Service in 2016.

The results showed that the quality of the “study-work” transition is better among those graduates who work in the specialty: their salary is 12% higher than among those who do not work in the specialty, they are more often satisfied with their current work and rarely want to change it, moreover, among them more graduates with vertical compliance. During the study, we also concluded that this gain is also characteristic of those graduates who decided not to work in their specialty but by their own initiative.

The results obtained during the study clearly showed us the importance of work by the specialty after graduation and made it possible to formulate a number of practical recommendations. The work proposed initiatives aimed at developing interaction between employers and higher educational institutions, suggested practices that universities and companies can carry out independently, as well as with the support of state and municipal authorities.
