The history of the Preobrazhensky Prikaz which existed during the whole period of Peter I’s reign (1682 – 1725) was in focus of numerous investigations. Many historians argued that the Preobrazhensky Prikaz played a significant role in the system of political detection in the 1690s – the 1720s; however, its division such as the Amusement Palace (Poteshny Dvor) and its record books have never become a topic of a specific investigation. This research offers a detailed examination of the record books of arrests, created inside the Amusement Palace (Poteshny Dvor) during the period from 1696 to 1712. Based on the archival documents, this research aims to illustrate the system of functioning of the Amusement Palace as an institution of police and social control and to reveal the informational potential of the sources. The conducted study allowed to distinguish and to analyze several basic blocks of information contained in the record books. Firstly, the record books provide information about the Amusement Palace as an important institution of police control in Moscow at the turn of the XVII – XVIII centuries. Secondly, the sources contain unique information about the urban daily life, crime, social structure and intergroup interaction in Moscow in the first half of Peter's reign.
