Nowadays, small and medium enterprises are the basis of any prosperous economy. Due to their flexible structure they can help to solve many problems and they are also able to implement effectively innovations in their activities. At the same time, SMEs face many obstacles that significantly hamper the innovative development of SMEs and the economy. Thus, the purpose of this study is to recognize those factors and barriers that prevent the development of innovative activity in the countries of the European Union and Russia. To accomplish this goal, such methods as correlation, comparative and multidimensional data analysis were used in order to evaluate the features of innovation activity in the EU countries and Russia and identify growth problems to adopt practices of successful foreign business practices.
