This thesis examines how the Spanish Civil War (1936 – 1939) was reflected in the Russian émigré press. Although many historians have studied either problems of the Spanish Civil War or of the Russian emigration separately, the number of people who studied the connection between these two problems is rather small. The present study is based on a variety of Russian émigré periodicals published in Europe during the period from 1936 to 1939, such as the dailies Vozrozhdenie, Poslednie Novosti or the journals Novaia Rossiia, Novyi Grad or Chasovoi. By the second half of the 1930s, Russian emigrants lived in exile already for over 20 years and established numerous journals and newspapers that expressed different political ideologies and views of their authors and readers, both liberal and conservative The study examines these views from various perspectives, paying attention not only to political, but also to religious and social aspects. It demonstrates that with respect to the Spanish Civil War the Russian émigré community was highly polarized, not only between political camps, but also within them. It also shows that for many Russian émigrés the Spanish Civil War was as much about the present and future of Spain as it was about that of Russia.
