The emergence of the notion of sainthood in the Christian world is a phenomenon which has attracted great interest among historians and anthropologists of the past century. Numerous studies have been dedicated to the social aspect of the cult of saints; less attention has been paid towards the saints who did not perform miracles but are considered to be holy as moral examples. The ways in which the images of these saints were constructed, including the use of certain discursive strategies, have not been given due attention either. The proposed study concerning the shaping of the image of Saint Paulinus of Nola (c.354-431) aims to fill these gaps and to analyze this process in its entirety. A broad range of primary sources, including numerous letters, collections of lives, religious treatises written between the 4th-6th centuries are used in order to investigate the practices of Paulinus’ self-representation, the employment of his image in the polemical texts of his contemporaries, its posthumous evolution, reshaping and, finally, its reception.
