In the conditions of a modern city, never mind big or small, a resident is inseparable linked with city space - landscape. The courtyard of a residential house, from the one hand, belongs to the sphere of public urban space. But, from the other hand, this is a part of the citizen’s daily private life where circles of communication between neighbors, children and other social groups are localized. In this sense, we can say that the courtyard is a kind of peripheral space between the private part of everyone’s life (the apartment) and the social environment (urban landscape). This research is devoted to the study of various types of improvement of public territories in the Moscow region (Fryazino, Zheleznodorozhny) and in two American cities (Portsmouth, Norfolk) - the concept of Zhek-art and Placemaking. The study will be based on applied sources - visual material and practical cases taken from open data sources in the case of USA; author's photo diary and interviews with other participants practice landscaping in the case of the Russian context.
