This work is devoted to the study of how the formation of the image of external threat determines patriotism.

We created own approach to define phenomenon of patriotism in the traditions of Schmitt and studied the simultaneous influence of real and symbolic external threats. To determine the image of the external threat an index was created based on the primary data from Twitter and their subsequent classification using Random Forest Classifier. This index and the indicators of the real external threat acted as a key country variables within the main method of research.

Implementation of multi-level analysis allowed us to identify the effect of physical and symbolic external threats to patriotism. Thus, it was proved that patriotism is positively influenced by the trust in the media and citizens ' feelings about the external threat. It is negatively influenced by images of the external threat, but it also has an indirect positive impact through the experiences of citizens. And the real external threat does not affect patriotism.

The main method of work has shown its stability in the construction of a model with fixed effects and the inclusion in the main model of an additional index based on primary data from Google Trends.
