This paper explores the problem and the process of adapting a literary work to cinema on the example of the novel “Roadside Picnic” by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky and the film “Stalker” by Andrey Tarkovsky. Elements of each art form are considered in structural and qualitative characteristics. It is important to note the concept of confrontation between a person and society or one’s own and another’s. This motive is in the story and is more vividly expressed in the film. Also, the structure of the works is similar to the Gothic quest in search of a mysterious subject. The specificity of the chronotope Tarkovsky stands in relation to time and space, which has a meaning-making function.
