The Impact of Economic Development on the Environment in Russian Regions
Economics
(Bachelor’s programme)
2019
This paper assesses the impact of economic development on the environment in the regions of the Russian Federation. The literature review revealed contradictory approaches to modeling the impact of economic development and environmental problems associated with the choice of the dependent variable. A comparative analysis of sustainable development indices was carried out, on the basis of which the adjusted net savings was chosen as the most suitable for the analysis of the situation in the Russian regions. Thus, 83 regions of the Russian Federation are studied in the period from 2013 to 2016. The main conclusion is the confirmation of the existence of the ecological curve of Kuznets: with the increase in economic development, environmental degradation has reached a turning point, which now leads to an improvement in the state of the environment. And the greatest effect on the environment has the growth rate of GRP. This study also takes into account the regional features identified after the clustering of regions.
