The Analysis of Theoretical Contributions for Empirical Articles of "Social Networks" Journal
2019
This research is an alternative version of the consideration of academic scientific publications in terms of citation networks, bibliographic networks and measuring empirical contribution of articles. As the main source of data for this study key foreign citation databases were selected. The objective of the analysis is to determine the impact of outgoing theoretical agenda from the foundational journal on the field of network analysis and the spread of its influence on related practical disciplines in terms of citations, authors, clusters of articles and blockmodeling.

Formulation of our research hypothesis: the scientific publication, in this case “Social Networks Journal”, due to its adherence to the policy of multidisciplinarity besides taking a central position in the field of its discipline, evolved into the core link between fields of study in academic society.

To confirm the hypothesis of our bibliometric research, the following analytical tools and methodologies were used – bibliographic coupling, co-occurrences of keywords, social network analysis, blockmodeling technique. The focus of the networks presented in the scientific report will be the total number of citations per each published article of the journal and the links between the articles formed by means of citation. By analyzing these relationships, it became possible to determine the nature of scientific material.

This study reflects the actual picture of the development of the journal, the construction of its relationships with other scientific fields, how it changed over time, the process of determining the disciplines most dependent on theoretical contributions.
