Analysis of Social Protest Movement «Gilets Jaunes»: a Network Approach

Student: Zaretskiy Stepan

Supervisor: Roman Chuhay

Faculty: International laboratory for Applied Network Research

Educational Programme: Applied Statistics with Network Analysis (Master)

Year of Graduation: 2019

In my work I study online discourse within the Gilets Jaunes movement from network perspective. Using Twitter API to sample tweets with \#giletjaunes hashtag, I construct a reply network based on a linking structure inside these tweets: people interact with each other by repling to tweets. Focusing on the structure of this network I identify influential information hubs and actors playing an active role in the online discourse. Also I look on the role of "offline" leaders in this network. Furthermore, exploring the structural patterns of the online network I apply various models of network analysis to capture and make inference over certain dependencies. For example, I found that presence of the media has a significant effect of presence of the interaction between actors.
