Translating Individually Coined Neologisms: the Case of Translating Fiction from English into Russian

Our world is developing as well as a language, so new words and set phrases occur more often in modern literature. These neologisms or words without equivalent must be threatening and understood correctly to devise an adequate translation. In the paper “Translating Individually Coined Neologisms: the Case of Translating Fiction from English into Russian” the most useful and appropriate means of translation of English individually coined neologisms are examined and structured. The study based on the analysis of lexical difficulties and neologisms in particular in the novel “The Folklore of Discworld” by Terry Pratchett from the lexicological and theory of translation point of view is to elaborate an algorithm of work with new lexemes and to use it in practice. In the paper some methods and criteria of evaluation of quality of translation are suggested. The paper includes 2 parts, first is theoretical, where the linguistic nature of neologisms is described. Second or practical part focuses on analysis of translation made including individually coined neologisms. Also the paper includes a translation of a part of the novel made by the author of this scientific paper. The work is intended for translators, linguists and specialists in cross-cultural communication, as well as for non-experts interested in correlation between linguistics and modern literature.
