Mechanism of Production of Counterfinality in a Constitutive Order: the Case of a Queue in a Subway Car
Complex Social Analysis
The presented theory-oriented work describes the main elements of the production mechanism of counterfinality in a constitutive order, and an empirical illustration of the fixing of the work of this mechanism is given. In the theoretical part, the analysis of the ideas of J. Elster regarding the problem of social contradictions, in particular the phenomenon of counterfinality, the unintended consequences that stem from uncoordinated actions. From the definition of this phenomenon, its properties and examples, a set of elements are derived that precede counterfinality and create the conditions for its appearance. In order to limit the field of research, the connection of counterfinality with the constitutive order is indicated: counterfinality occurs when the constitutive order ceases to exist, but counterfinality creates conditions for the constitution of a new order. In the empirical part of the work we consider the case of a queue in a subway car. As a result of observations on the platforms of the two stations, the influence of the organization of space and time, the violation of the order of entry, the background information and certain intentions on the production of counterfinality in a constitutive order is indicated.
