This work is devoted to the study of the Republic of Fiume, the state created in late 1919 by Gabriele D'Annunzio and his supporters in the territory of the city of the same name. The Republic of Fiume or, as it was officially called, the Karnar regency existed for just over a year, but in this relatively short period of time the local regime developed a rather interesting official ideology and symbolism, as well as its own system of political rituals. Subsequently, all these “developments” had a significant impact on the development of the fascist movement in Italy and were actively exploited by the Mussolini regime. The case of the Republic of Fiume itself can be viewed, on the one hand, as a kind of “rehearsal” of Italian fascism, and on the other hand, as a natural consequence of a number of political and social processes which have taken their place in Europe and in particular Italy of the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The purpose of this work is to thoroughly reconstruct the ideological narratives of the D'Annunzio state and to analyze its political practices in order to identify their genesis and draw analogies with the further development of the Italian political field.
