The Formation Strategies of Civil Identity in Modern Russian Cinema in Cultural Policy Perspective

Student: Ermakovich Evgeniy

Educational Programme: Visual Culture (Master)

Year of Graduation: 2019

As the title implies, the diploma paper is devoted to analysis of the state cultural policy influence on modern popular cinema in the context of the formation of civic identity. Films which funded by the state at different levels (federal and regional) represent certain categories of values, that are preferable within the framework of state ideology. Based on the cultural and administrative aspects of the analysis of state regulation, the research focuses on the narrative and visual features of state-funded Russian films. The requirements for the content of film production at both the federal and regional levels are ceremonial, which allows filmmakers to ignore important tasks for the state. Because of this, the formation of civic identity, which declared in official documents, is in question. This fact creates a contradiction between the declarative statement of ethical values and the real content of many films and explains the contradictory reaction of Russian viewers to national films.
