Translating the Novel "The Lord of the Rings" by J.R.R. Tolkien into Russian: Problematic Areas

The graduation qualification thesis is dedicated to the translation of the novel “The Lord of the Rings” by J.R.R. Tolkien from the linguaesthetical point of view. It claims to invent a new multidimensional strategy of translating the novel into Russian. The relevance of the research is predetermined by the fact, that linguaesthetical peculiarities of “The Lord of the Rings” were not reflected by Russian translators of the novel in a befitting way. The research paper focuses on “soundsense” of the text, its diversified musicality, stylistic features, and linguaesthetically differentiated cultural and mythology background, embodied in proper names, paremiological units, proverbial expressions and poetic texts to full extent. These background elements are analysed not only according to their individual linguistic aesthetics, but also in terms of the imagine culture “linguaesthetical profiles” and global context as well. It provides a seamless connection between the linguaesthetical and systematical approaches within the scope of the translation method. Moreover, an annotated translation of the single chapter of “The Lord of the Rings” is given by the author of the research paper according to the strategy suggested.
