The research is devoted to prisons and particularities of imprisonment in Russia in the 17th century. We made an attempt to create a comprehensive picture of secular imprisonment. Moreover, we looked on the formation of this system in a range of other punishments that were more widely used in practice. The prison is viewed from two angles: state and domestic. Not only how the policy of the sovereign in relation to prisons was released, but also how were defined the conditions in imprisoment. The everyday life of prisoners was reconstructed. In general, the reconstruction of the history of prisons allows us to talk about the functions and meaning of punishment in Russia in the 17th century.
