Recently, private supplementary tutoring has become a worldwide phenomenon and a vast enterprise. It differs from mainstream education and constitutes an alternative educational market. However, the supply of private tutoring lessons remains understudied, due to the difficulties with obtaining data. This study focuses on the price formation of private tutoring services of Unified State Exam subjects. For the purposes of the study, we assume that the private tutoring market demonstrates features of status-based markets and that the price is a signal of tutor’s qualifications. The data for the study comes from the most popular online advertising platform for private tutors in Russia. The aim of this research is to measure how demographic and professional characteristics of tutors affect the market value of their services. To answer the research question, mixed-effects regression models and text-regression models are applied.
