Volunteering is a complex interdisciplinary issue, that is widely discussed in the scientific community all over the world. However, the explanation of why do people participate in non-profit activities still has many gaps in it. This study aims to examine core values and motives that underlie youth volunteering in Saint-Petersburg and the way they vary, depending on its direction and subject. The mixed methods design of the study suggests a complex approach to data collection and analysis, which is supposed to provide a complete picture of what interpersonal and contextual aspects make young people volunteer. The analysis revealed some sort of relationship between the specifics of volunteer activities and the values of their participants; the main motives and stages of volunteering were also identified. The understanding of the values of volunteer activities, as such, may propose various practical implications in terms of attracting adolescents and students into the sphere.
