The Bechdel test is a sequence of three questions designed to assess the presence of women in movies. According to the results of the research «FiveThirtyEight» cinematography products that have passed the Bechdel test are more likely to make a profit compared to films that did not pass the test. Journalists and film critics are also interested in gender balance in the film product, as society is moving towards equal rights between the genders. This paper is devoted to the study of gender equality in Russian and world cinema. The paper analyses 8,000 films that were released from 1888 to 2018 in 94 countries around the world. The study confirmed the theory of changes in the cinema of most developed countries and in Russia, despite Bechdel test’s unpopularity.
