Among a vast variety of games the most widely praised type is role-playing game. This research is guided by the questions how authentic tabletop role-playing games can be incorporated into teaching English to young learners and what the effects of such technique will be on the development of speaking skills. The notions of role-playing game existing in game theory and English language teaching have been compared and the notion of serious game has been thoroughly analyzed, with recommendations for creation of an educational game being devised. Relying on the theoretical background we have designed a serious game with the elements of tabletop role-playing game and conducted a pedagogical experiment at Primary School. The suggested technique proved to be efficient and provided learners with sufficient individual speaking time along with boosting their motivation and involvement.
