Stylistic Features of Translation of Popular Science Texts (the end of the ХХ – the beginning of ХХI century)

In the XXIst century many people around the world are interested in popular science literature. Since most of this literature is published in English, high-quality and accurate translation into other languages, including Russian, is especially relevant. This research is devoted to stylistic features of translation of popular science literature from English into Russian. The main purpose of the research is to identify the strategy of translating popular science text with preservation of the author's style. In this thesis two translations of popular science books from English into Russian "A Brief History of Time" by Stephen Hawking (1996) and "Misbehaving: The Making of Behavioral Economics" by Richard Thaler (2015) are scrutinized. There were used such research methods as sampling, pre-translation and a comparative analysis. There were analyzed different translation techniques used by translators to convey cognitive, emotional and aesthetic information. The analysis revealed that the translation of emotionally coloured vocabulary and terminology is the most difficult issue. We came to the conclusion that modern translators tend to preserve the author’s style of narration, using a great variety of translation methods. The results of this study can contribute to the deepening of knowledge of translation of popular science texts. The assessment of the quality of translations can serve as a basis for newer editions of the examined books.
