Grammaticalization of Postpositions in Chuvash
Philology
(Bachelor’s programme)
2019
This work proposes an account for the grammaticalization of Chuvash postpositions. Based on existing papers about grammaticalization and collected sentences and texts from native speakers, it puts forward new criteria, which are relevant for Chuvash language (more precisely, for one of the dialects ), for determining the degree of grammaticalization of postpositional units. The analyzed units differ in a number of features from both typical adpositions and typical nouns. Besides, they themselves also do not form a homogeneous group. Using the developed criteria, many postpositional units have been disclosed and classified according to the degree of their grammaticalization and placed on the grammaticalization scale «noun -> postposition». The materials for the research were obtained during expeditions to the Republic of Chuvashia from native speakers. By results of research, postpositional units were divided into several categories.
