The issue of identity search in modern literature has always been popular and widely discussed, particularly in American culture, due to the existing uncertainty of national self-identification. The given paper examines the issue of identity search in the novels of Toni Morrison: “God Help the Child” and “Home”. The principal objective of this paper is to identify the specifics of the artistic embodiment of identity search in the above mentioned works. According to this objective, the following tasks have been set: to research the historical and literary preconditions of the problem of identity search considering its further evolution, describe interracial relationships and the role of color, analyze the concept of motherhood and family identity in African-American community, examine the ethnic category along with the phenomenon of racial segregation. The object of research is represented by two novels of T. Morrison: “God Help the Child” and “Home”. The subject of research is the search of cultural, national, ethnic and social identity in T.
