The present thesis work focuses on paraphrase and its place in English economic mass media. Key questions concerning the usage of paraphrase, its types and functions are considered. Paraphrasing is examined to find out whether its usage is effective in economic journalism, and whether it resembles the functioning of paraphrase in other forms of writing art – fiction, social and political journalism. The methodology employed in the present research includes hypothetico-deductive approach, building a text corpus, conducting written discourse analysis, applying descriptive and quantitative methods. The study consists an analysis of types and functions of paraphrase, after which the typology is composed, and a glossary is compiled. The data have been collected from three British newspapers: conservative The Telegraph, liberal The Independent and left-centred The Guardian, articles published in “Economics” and “Business” sections between May 12, 2018 and May 26, 2018. The chief findings of the present research indicate that the majority types of paraphrases found in another study fields operate in economic mass media as well. Most of the previously observed paraphrase functions are also valid for economic journalism. The hypothesis that the difference between paraphrases in the newspapers of various political orientation is distinctly visible on the material of economic and business articles was proved. The results achieved could advance our understanding of the nature of paraphrase and serve as a basis for further studies. In future it seems appropriate to put theory into practice and employ this knowledge more widely, especially in teaching the translation studies. One of the possible ways to continue this research is to examine paraphrases in different languages, comparing articles about same events and characters.
