Modern English Loanwords of Icelandic Origin

Student: Vasilyeva Anna

Supervisor: Maria A. Volkonskaya

Educational Programme: Foreign Languages and Intercultural Communication (Bachelor)

Final Grade: 9

Year of Graduation: 2019

The English language has been under considerable influence of various foreign languages - Greek, Latin, Norse, French - over the centuries of its existence. Their interrelationships with English in terms of grammar and lexicon have been thoroughly examined and evaluated by the scholars. However, the influence pf certain modern languages on English still remains an open research problem. In this regard, the current paper analyses the way the Icelandic borrowings are used in Modern English (from the late 15th c. to date). In order to achieve this aim, the data from the Oxford English Dictionary and Online Etymology Dictionary will be analysed. On their basis, the borrowings of Icelandic origin will be identified and classified according to several criteria, e.g. semantic fields that they belong to or the date of the first occurrence in the English-language works.
