This paper is devoted to the development of an approach for the selection of startups in the venture investor portfolio. We consider theoretical approaches to making investment decisions and methods for evaluating venture investment activity. Based on the analysis of the theoretical base and the quantitative analysis of the retrospective data of the investment activities of venture companies, a new improved approach for the selection of startups is being developed. The Crunchbase database is used as a data source for quantitative analysis. With its help, we collected data about the characteristics of startups and venture investors, as well as information about investment operations. Approbation of the developed approach is also carried out by comparing its results with the basic models. As a result of this work, we get a new approach that is able to provide more correct results in selecting startups for a venture investor’s portfolio.
