Today, there are active changes in the sphere of international relations, in particular, the balancing of powers: the position of the United States, its involvement into world processes is called into question, and China’s transformation into a new leader is increasingly being discussed. However, such a transformation cannot happen if the country does not have certain characteristics and resources. A small number of works really considers the PRC in terms of having the necessary parameters. So, the purpose of the work is to study the phenomenon of global leadership, identifying the potential of the PRC in this role. To achieve this goal, a theoretical background of the notions “leader”, “hegemon”, “challenger” is considered, the Western and Chinese points of view on this issue are identified. On the basis of the established criteria - a political-strategic organization of global range, level of economic development, openness of society and participation in global problems - the current status of China, the degree of compliance with the characteristics of the leader will be analyzed. The study concludes that at this moment China is at the stage of development, but it is very likely that in the coming years it will indeed take the position of world leader.
