This study examines the individual determinants of leaving religion, which refers to the absence of religious affiliation in the present, but belonging in the past. The literature that is connected to the process of leaving religion shows that there is a paradox between dropping church and advantages that religion could give to followers. On the data base of the eighth round of the European social survey, the impact of life events and basic values on leaving religion was analyzed using a regression model and correlation analysis. The article provides an overview of the social and academic background of the process of leaving religion, a brief overview of the theory of religious conversion and empirical research on this topic, and describes the main results of the study.
