Performative Activism as a Form of Non-violent Resistance (Using an Example of Enviromental Protest)

Prosperity and health parameters of human being depend to a large extent on the state of the natural environment in which human lives. The adverse impact of transnational corporations on nature and human health is a pressing environmental issue and is recognized by scientists at the international level. Performative protest actions of the international non-governmental organization Greenpeace, aimed at combating transnational corporations in order to monitor the compliance of companies with environmental standards. Performance is an effective way to communicate and demonstrate values and ideas in the context of environmental policy. Thanks to emotionally powerful means of symbolic production, the performative form of protest is a powerful communicative practice in the field of politics. By analyzing quantitative and qualitative data of Greenpeace’s performative protest actions, norms and values, main political demands of the protest subject are identified and their significance as a catalyst for political and social changes are assessed. The research paper presents an analysis of the structural elements of the Greenpeace’s performance protest actions and attempts to determine the effectiveness of a performative protest as a method of non-violent resistance.
