Educational Programme: Cultural Studies (Bachelor)

Year of Graduation: 2019

The aim of the work is to find and analyze the elements of everyday life in the stories of the Soviet science fiction writer Pavel Amnuel (born 1944). The stories belong to the science fiction subgenre which is called hard sch-fi. A distinctive feature of this hard sci-fi is the presence of detailed descriptions from the fields of the technical and natural sciences. A writer working in this genre is forced to balance between science and artistry. In the stories of P.Amnuel technology development is the main theme. Nevertheless, the details of everyday life are also present in them and form the framework of the action. The historian I.Orlov defines everyday life as something that «happens every day, that is why it is not surprising». He also writes about literary material as one of the possible sources for the study of everyday life. In the current work by everyday life are the following elements understood: the setting, names, titles, material items, social institutions and professions. This methodology of reading texts was borrowed from the studies of I.Glushchenko and A. Kravchenko and applied to the stories of P.Amnuel.
