Image of foreign countries' leaders in the mass media of the PRC
Asian and African Studies
(Bachelor’s programme)
2019
The image of a foreign political leader is an interesting yet little-studied topic of research. Although the existing works provide a detailed analysis of the evolution of traditional ideas about leadership in China, however, there is almost no research on how the Chinese media portray foreign leaders. In this paper, using the methods of computer-aided text analysis, as well as methods of content analysis, the factors affecting the positive or negative assessment of a foreign political leader in the PRC media are investigated. The results of data analysis showed that the traditional Chinese ideas of the ideal leader influence the image of a leader in the PRC news media. It is also shown that in the case of the media subject to the influence of the CPC, the criticism or approval of the leader is mainly related to the CPC’s attitude towards the foreign leader. In addition, the features of specific publications can also influence the formation of the image of a foreign leader reflected in the media.
