Abstract

The thesis represents initial analysis of a series of Chinese scrolls from the collection of E.E. Ukhtomskii, which is kept in St. Petersburg Kunstkamera. It clarifies the origin of the collection and gives an account of the activities of E.E. Ukhtomskii and his contribution to the oriental science. It also demonstrates the results of the subject-thematic and religious studies’ analysis of the images in the context of sino-Buddhist ideas of the afterlife existence, typical of ancient China. The thesis also provides insight into a number of issues, related to the process of the assimilation of Buddhist doctrines in ancient China. The analysis of the imagery of the scrolls and the identification of the characters was based on the complex of sources, in particular, on the collection “Jade Tablets” (“Yuli Baochao”). These images, which undoubtedly are of great artistic value, actually represent illustrations to this text and can be characterized as didactic materials, featuring the lamentable results of the infringement of Buddhist morals.
