The Existential Choice of "the Superfluous Man" in the Works of Foreign Authors of the XX Century: Interpretative and Didactic Aspects in Teaching in Russian Schools

Student: Zrazhaeva Alina

Supervisor: Mikhail Pavlovets

Faculty: Institute of Education

Educational Programme: Contemporary Philology in Literature Instruction at Secondary Schools (Master)

Year of Graduation: 2020

The school course of literature is focused on the study of Russian-language works. Foreign literature is not very much present in programs and textbooks, its knowledge is not checked in the framework of the state final certification - neither in the 9th, nor in the 11th grade. This creates a false idea about the place of Russian literature in world culture, and forms an artificial contrast between Russian and foreign literature. Students lose their understanding of the connection between the works of foreign and Russian authors. I believe that the points of contact between foreign and Russian literature can be identified and demonstrated using the literary type of "the Superfluous Man" Therefore, the goal of my work is to propose a new interpretation of the “the Superfluous Man” by analyzing the existential choice of these heroes and its consequences.
