The work is devoted to the scientific and practical grounding of recommendations for improving the mechanism for managing individual development trajectories in the formation of law students’ professional competencies. The empirical basis for formulating recommendations was a survey of law students and professors of the Northern (Arctic) Federal University named after M.V. Lomonosov. Based on a critical analysis, the work clarifies the definition of professional competencies of law students, and identifies and justifies the problems of formulating professional competencies enshrined in the federal state standard of higher education in the field of “Jurisprudence”. The work interprets the meaning and principles of constructing and implementing individual development trajectories in the formation of law students’ professional competencies, as well as formulates the author’s definition of this concept. In addition, the work identifies and formulates questions and directions for further research in this area.
